Great stay at Engadine Inn And Cabins

My wife and I just returned from a fabulous four-day excursion to visit the Biltmore Estate and the area around Asheville, NC. We had heard from friends about the quaint, historic Victorian Bed and Breakfast called Engadine Inn, located just off Route 40 at the Candler Exit. Although we had booked a room in the Inn in advance, upon arrival, we found that the property also contains six well-appointed log cabins of various sizes. After walking the grounds and finding the largest cabin, Mt. Mitchell, cleaned and available, we switched our reservation from the Inn to the cabin.  Alex, the property owner, couldn't have been more accommodating. He even invited us to have breakfast each morning at the Inn.

After two days of touring the Biltmore and its surrounding grounds, we spent the remaining two days hiking some of the most beautiful and rugged mountain trails we've ever experienced. Western North Carolina, The Biltmore Estate, trails in the Piscah National Forest, and the hospitality and charm of Engadine Inn and Cabins made this one of the most memorable road trips we have ever experienced.

The Hidden Jewel of Asheville: Engadine Inn and Cabins

No one was present to greet us at check in even though we checked in between 3 and 7 as noted on the website. We had been texted code numbers to get into the house and our room. There were used washcloths hanging in our shower and no clean washcloths. We called the contact number, and it was answered by someone in the Philippines. Dirty dishes were still out in the breakfast room. Clean washcloths were eventually delivered after 10 pm. Breakfast is the same buffet each morning, consisting of scrambled eggs, bacon, and a selection of bread and fruit. This experience did not match what I have experienced at bed and breakfasts for the past 30 years. Alex (owner) and Edward (manager) are personable and helpful when they can be reached, but there is rarely someone at the inn. The house is beautiful,  but this is a very self-service experience and should not be called a bed and breakfast.

Decided to take a last minute road trip to Asheville with friends and ended up at Engadine. What an incredible and unique find, and the view was beyond gorgeous! Our cabin was comfortable, clean, and had everything we needed for a relaxing get away. We love to walk and there were plenty of trails on the property to explore, in addition to those nearby, but we were quite happy with where we were and never even left.  We are definitely planning a return stay!

I chose Asheville for my bday getaway, and booking Engadine turned out to be the gift I gave myself. Best. Gift. Ever. Set in the beautiful Blue Ridge mountains, the Inn did not disappoint. We stayed in the Vineyard View Room, which was spacious, gracious, and totally indulgent. (I even bought an Engadine bathrobe as a SECOND gift to myself!) Our totally charming hosts, Rick and Tom, were available enough to be helpful without being intrusive. But one more essential comment about Engadine: breakfast! We were greeted each morning with an incredible two-course feast, casually but beautifully presented. This place is not only a deal, it’s the REAL deal. We’ll be back waaay before my next birthday!
