Built circa 1840, the Smith McDowell House has witnessed many changes of Asheville and its surrounding mountain communities. Some of these changes even influenced the technology and architecture in the house itself, as a number of private owners outfitted the house with modern comforts. By 1974, the Smith-McDowell House began its first major renovation into a museum. Today, the museum offers comprehensive regional history spanning social, environmental, economic, and geographical topics. Whether a first-time visitor, or a long-time resident of the region, guests are sure to find deeper meanings to the treasures, triumphs, and tragedies which occurred within these mountain ranges.
